When I think of a "Dobermann", I think of a breed that is founded on "old" German bloodlines lines. A working dog with an excellent mentality, health and longlivety.
The Dobermann is a dog that is capable of being both a service dog and at the same time serves as an excellent family dog. The Dobermann is supposed to be sleek, alert and is able to "think" by himself, not a robot that is good with listening to commands and serves an only purpose of being a show dog.
When I look at today's Dobermann and compare it with the Dobermann from the 70's, I see a dog that is on steroids, massive chest, big head but with very little thinking ability, a dog that unfortunately barely makes it to 9 and is bred merely for the purpose of competing on shows. Are we breeding Dobies or Rotties?
What happend to our service dogs? to the our war heroes? why is it so that German Shephard is the number one choice for service work?
What I feel is that today's breeders are simply destroying the breed. There are extremely very few breeders that breed using old german blood lines and try to preserve the Dobermann as it should be.
I feel that competition, prestige, money, shows whatever have come first. As Valencia once wrote, I challenge any show dog with an IPO title to pass the "park" test, the real life test.
I fear that in a decade or so old blood lines will disappear, and the "true" Dobermann breed will disappear with it. And yes I am pointing my finger to most breeders that care only about looks and titles rather than health, life span and temperment. You're turning our favorite breed into a Great Dane, a dog that barely makes it to 7.
I'm sure I'm gonna get some negative feedbacks on this post. So say what you have to say.
