first of all Walter how old is your dog? I am assuming it is still a young dog and will soon bark at strangers coming near or knocking on your door or property. |

| How well did your pup come through it's health issues? It would be helpful for people on this board to know about the general temperment of the pup. If it is has stable nerves and strong drives it would be good to start training in Schutzhund/IPO in the near future. If it had high defense drives you might not be asking the question how to get it to bark, but it could indicate high courage/prey drives. With proper training you would want to develop both. People may not want to give advise in this area without knowing circumstances of your living environment or plans for ongoing training and control. With the previous health problems the pup had it might be better to let it get over those issues for a while before introducing more stress. Let it gain more confidence and see how it develops naturally before doing something that may damage it. You could begin just playing with it with a burlap sack and not move the sack until the puppy barks at it. Keep it fun, though because it sounds as though that pup has been through a lot and and does not need a lot of extra stressors. Let it win everytime for now and try to teach it at the same time to let go of it at your command to out/ous. There are some good books on the subject such as Susan Barwig's "Schutzhund Theory and Training methods". |
